When you read stuff like this you have to wonder just what back-door shenanigans may be in play to get John Roberts confirmed. For the life of me I can’t really see what any Democratic senator has to lose by not voting to confirm Roberts. As Armando right points out in his post, the Democrats have basically screwed themselves and, more importantly, the American people.
Bush now has a free hand to nominate whatever wingnut he pleases. What are the Dems gonna do? Fight? Don’t make me laugh.
So, so long the right to choose. So long Congress’ Commerce power. So long checks on Presidential power. So long civil rights laws.

And by the way, so long to the Politics of Contrast and Fighting Dems on social issues. The DLC has won by default. We are all "values" voters now.
When Harry Reid was promoted to the position of leader for the party I really thought we had someone there, but I think this incident shows that he has very little sway with his fellow Democratic senators.
