Ghost Whisperer OK After All
When I first heard that CBS was going to air a show called Ghost Whisperer my first thought was it would just be a rip-off of the psychic crime drama, and a favorite of mine, Medium. Turns out I was wrong; it’s more like a rip-off of The Sixth Sense, but with a sexy babe instead of a gawky pre-teen. That being said, Ghost Whisperer actually turned out to be a rather good show. Instead of a crime drama with a twist, this show is more of family drama with a twist. Jennifer Love Hewitt plays a psychic who helps stranded spirits move on — to walk into the "light" no less.
***SPOILERS***
In its premier episode, Hewitt’s newly-married character, Melinda Gordon, is confronted by the spirit of a long-dead soldier from the Vietnam War who thinks that the birth of his grandchild is actually the birth of the son he never knew. With the help of Gordon, the soldier learns that he died, that his son grew up thinking he was a hero and admired the father he never knew personally. Along the way, we’re introduced to Gordon’s husband, Jim, who is a paramedic and still dealing with the death of the brother he couldn’t save (who also happens to visit Hewitt); and Gordon’s antique store partner, Andrea Moreno, the fabulously under-used and under-valued Aisha Tyler.
As the story progresses to the end you know will – must – happen you’re treated to some dramatic and touching moments. Yeah, the show can be a little like the psychic version of Touched by an Angel, but it also has a dark underside I hope the show will develop over time. I almost didn’t watch the show, actually recorded it instead, but I’m glad I did. CBS may actually have created a ratings-winner Friday for a change.
