I both like and dislike some aspects of this development. First, I like the fact that military persons, recently returned from the Gulf, are running for office as Democrats. This is good because it shows what we’ve always known to be true: that while the military as a whole is most likely more conservative than most, it is not lockstep Republican; and yes, there are liberals and progressive who choose to serve their nation in the military. For too long, the military has been considered lost to the Democrats; I’ve never believed that because I myself know many vets who are Democrats, and like the men in this article they too question the decisions made by their commander in chief.
What I dislike is that I think it could backfire in some ways. Those Republicans I know who are former and currently military persons are vehement supporters of the president and see questioning him as near treason. When I directed one of them to the website of the late Colonel David Hackworth he actually stopped speaking to me for several months he was offended.
What I like about the crop of men discussed in this article is that none of them are ultra-left anti-war liberals. Yes, they are Democrats — solidly so — but they are coming at it from a different angle. They are trying to point out that we need an exit strategy, that the current battle plan is not working, and that our soldiers deserve better. I don’t know how many will win, but it’s still great to see.
