Southern Vampires

Link:  HBO, ‘Six Feet’ creator reunite for new series

I was never a big fan of Six Feet Under, too depressing for me, and now it’s creator, Alan Ball, is taking on one of my favorite series:  Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series.  Harris took the old tried and true idea of vampires living among us and breathed new life into it with humor and a southern setting (the Louisiana Bayou).  Harris’ heroine, Sookie Stackhouse, is able to read people’s mind, which is not always a great thing, and finds herself involved in the local vampire community.  HBO is the perfect place for a show like this and I hope Ball does it justice.

My opinion is still out on the idea of releasing movies simultaneously in theaters and on DVD.  Most of my movie viewing in done at home by renting DVDs, but there are films I would pay to see on the big screen (Lord of the Rings, any Star Wars film, etc.), but I can see where many people would like to have the opportunity to skip the theaters, especially families.  Of course, many in the entertainment industry oppose this idea for a variety of reasons, but I think M. Night Shymalan’s reasoning is very lame:  it would erode artistic integrity.  Please!  I especially like the little turning of the knife with his final comment:  "If this thing happens, you know the majority of your theaters are closing. It’s going to crush you guys." Nice!

Moses, Moses, Moses!

You know, I was never a great fan of Mel Gibson’s movies.  I enjoyed his Mad Max movies and I thought he gave one of the finest performances of his career in the first Lethal Weapon movie, but he’s was never a must-watch actor for.  Since the Passion of the Christ pseudo controversy, which ruined an otherwise good film for me, I’ve liked him even less.  Now, he’s whoring for his next film which will once again be in a language no one has spoken in hundreds of years.  This time, however, he’s lined up Disney to release the film.  No surprise there.  Disney has always shone a willingness to pander itself to Conservative families.

By the way, Gibson needs to lose the beard.  It makes him look like a pathetic reject from a Cecile B. DeMille biblical movie.  Paging Yvonne DeCarlo and John Derek!

Conistency

You have to give it to the Bush administration:  no matter how their appointments turn out to be, they don’t go for anyone better.

Wow!  Never saw this coming.  I’ve even read George Takei’s autobiography and I don’t recall him ever mentioning this — heck, I thought he was married!  Well, good for you Mr. Sulu, you’re gay.

‘…[C]riminalization of conservative politics.”

If DeLay means conservative politics is outing CIA operatives and giving the finger to campaign laws, then yes.
