John Spencer 1946-2005

No matter what you may think The West Wing’s politics or of the show itself, you have to admit John Spencer was one hell of an actor.  Personally, I think his best television work was on LA Law, but he and his character were the heart of The West Wing.

Agree and Disagree

I can both agree and disagree with Morgan Freeman when it comes to designating a Black History Month.  Sure, black history is American history, but my understanding of why we continue to observe a black history month is that the contributions of African Americans to the success of this country is often overlooked.  Moreover, the contribtions of most non-caucasian Americans is overlooked.  As we become an even more integrated country maybe that will change.

A TV Show Waiting to Happen

Now this is a great pick-up line for an
eighteen-year-old:  “Hi, I’m the mayor.”  I don’t know how well
this young man will succeed, but like any politician he can only do
the best possible job.  Either way, it’s great to see someone so
young so civic minded.

I’m sure Hollywood has come calling.  This is a great idea for either a sitcom or a one hour drama/comedy.

Now This Surprised Me

I find it not only odd that a
Republican controlled Senate could not get their Patriot Act
legislation passed, but interesting that several Republicans joined
with Democrats.  Of course, a real Conservative would not want to
grant government more power than it needed to safeguard our country.

I was accused by a commenter on this
site of being one of those anti-American Liberals who supports
terrorists because I wasn’t in favor of this legislation, but of
course that’s just stupid.  What I don’t support is giving up our
basic civil liberties, the very liberties our Founding Fathers fought
and died to achieve, in the name of national security.  The truth of
the matter is we don’t need to.  As the bi-partisan
Republican-appointed September 11 Committee pointed out, it wasn’t
that we didn’t have an infrastructure in place to stop the attacks,
it’s that we allowed partisanship and laziness prevent us from seeing
what was plainly before our eyes.  Contrary to what some may think, I
don’t support the terrorists because I refuse to support the Patriot
Act, I just think we can use our current legal system – one of the
finest in the world, even with its faults – to keep us safe. As Senator
John Sununu (R-NH) said (paraphrasing Benjamin Franklin), "Those that would give up essential liberties in pursuit [of] a little
temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security."

By the way, if Republicans think using
the Patriot Act as a wedge to defeat Democrats will work for them,
they are more out of touch than anyone could believe.  A wide swath
of Americans on both side of the political spectrum do no support the
Patriot Act.
