Put Up or Shut Up

Apparently, President Bush is going to discusses America’s addiction to oil.  Of course, it’s the same old BS we always hear from presidents, especially this one.  If President Bush really wanted to do something about our dependence on foreign oil he’s come up with a better idea than drilling in ANWR.

Bush Wins, America Loses

Hold on, I think we’re in for a bumpy ride the next 40 years.

A Load of BS

Nan A. Talese, the publisher who heaped A Million Little Pieces on to the world, says it’s not her fault James Frey lied in his "memoir."  According to her, and most in the publishing industry, it’s not the job of the publisher to prove an author’s assertions are true.  They just accept the word of the author.  What a load of bullshit!  To a certain extent I can accept that answer, but when an everyday person can use the Internet to discover the fallacies in Frey’s book I think the hugely successful Random House can hire a few interns to do the same.  This is the same kind of bullshit answer that allows morons like Ann Coulter to be publish lies for Random House’s other imprint, Crown.

Take That Mom and Dad

I’m not sure what to think of this device.  I do think the first time it can be linked to a child abduction or pedophile is the last time you’ll see it on the market.

It’s been awhile since I was a teenager and there were certainly times when I wished my parents would butt the hell out of my life and give me some privacy.  With 20/20 hindsight I can see they were only looking out for my best interests and doing whatever they could to keep me safe.  Teenagers shouldn’t have this kind of privacy, in my opinion.  They certainly have no right to privacy while they are still minors.  Parents need the tools to make sure their children remain safe, and if that means reading their IM logs or checking the websites they visit, then so be it.  There are too many frightening things out there.

Too Little Too Late

We should have seen this coming.  Democrats really fumbled this and may have changed the balance  of the court for the next 40 years.

Oh, Please!

What a load of crap!  Yeah, and it’s Tom Clancy’s fault for educating terrorists so they could more easily attack us on September 11!

Speaking of Wasting Taxpayer Money…

I wonder how this lawsuit is going to play out?  Walgreen’s already has one of those stupid policies allowing pharmacists to opt out of filling prescriptions they find morally wrong as long as someone else is there to fill it.  If not, then they are required to fill the prescription.  Sounds good to me, but then I think this entire lawsuit and these policies are bullshit.  Personally, I don’t think any employer should have to give this option to their paid staff.   I also don’t buy the whole religious freedom line either.   Medical practitioners, be they doctor, nurse, physician’s assistant, or pharmacist, should be putting the well-being of the patient first.  The patient in front of them, not the possible patient that may or may not be growing inside the woman.  That’s their job, and if their religion doesn’t allow them to do that, then they should get a different job.  And no, I don’t think that’s anti-religion.  What I think is anti-religion is all the moral assholes who want to make victims of rape and incest who may not even have a life growing inside of them yet suffer more than they already have.  I think Walgreens made every effort to allow these pharmacists to abide by their beliefs:  they weren’t fired, and they were offered transfers to a neighboring state without the Illinois requirement (I’m ashamed to says it’s Missouri) that wouldn’t even have required them to move.

If Walgreens loses this case is could have far-reaching repercussions.  This case involves emergency contraception, but what’s next:  condoms, birth control pills, KY Jelly!  Then there are other issues.  If religion is used by people to opt out of this task, then what’s to stop employees from suing companies for requiring them to work on Sunday or Wednesday evening?  What if an employee decides he or she cannot ring up liquor?  The courts, so far, have held that employers only have to fulfill reasonable requests as concerns religion and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to request an employee to fill a prescription when there is no else available to do so.

Does Oscar Hate America’s Judeo-Christian Ethic?

I just may have to watch the Oscars this year.  They are looking to be the gayest show ever!  Brokeback Mountain is a hit; the film won the Producers Guild award, making it a sure bet to take the Oscar for Best Picture; and now the Directors Guild has chosen Ang Lee as filmmaker of the year, making him a near shoe-in for the Best Director Oscar.  Heath Ledger has been getting a lot of attention for Best Actor, but he seems to be losing out to Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote.  I’ve seen Hoffman’s performance, and it’s great, but I haven’t seen Ledger in Brokeback since I have to drive 100 miles in order to see it.  Even if Ledger doesn’t win Best Actor, the film will most likely win Director, Picture, and Screenplay Adaptation.  That will be something, I think.

Strange Bedfellows

When Iran wants to build nuclear facilities they’re our enemy; when Iran wants to block gay rights groups from having a voice at the UN they’re our friend.  Too disgusting to even comment on.

20 Years Later

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the Challenger space shuttle was destroyed — three years since Columbia, 39 years since Apollo 1 (I was six months in the womb during that disaster).  I can remember sitting in my dorm room watching television as it began to air the Challenger explosion over and over and over again.  It was my freshmen year, my roommates and I skipped the entire day of classes and sat riveted in front of the cheap little 13-inch television we had.  I can remember even now how sick I was of seeing all the news program replay the explosion again and again.  How I wished they would show some respect for the dead.  Of course, it’s even worse now.
