The Biggest Hit of 2006

Will Brokeback Mountain turn out to be the biggest hit of 2006?  The film is not even in 500 theaters and it has already grossed $22.5 million.  What will it do once it goes wide across the US?  If it gets some Oscar love I can easily see it moving past $100 million.

Recently, a friend of mine and myself were discussing this film.  She’s seen it, I plan to.  We wondered if this film would have been embraced if it had been directed by someone other than Ang Lee and starred openly gay actors?  Neither of us believe only gay can play gay or straight can play straight, but with openly gay actors would this film be considered a romance or just soft-core gay porn?  Granted, it would be difficult to turn Annie Proulx’s wonderful short story into soft-core porn of any kind.

The Book of Daniel

So, I watched Book of Daniel, TIVOed it actually.  First, it’s a rather mediocre show; not bad, not all the good, either.  Yes, it’s certainly a skewed view of the American family, but it’s supposed to be satire, isn’t it?

Politics and Baptisms

Because it’s always appropriate using baptisms to push a political agenda.

Google Pack: What’s So Great About It?

Google Pack seems to be getting a lot of attention these days, but what’s so great about it?  To me, it’s nothing more than a load unnecessary crap to take up space on my computer.

Rooney Makes Sense

I’m not a big fan of Andy Rooney, never have been, and his eyebrows really frighten me.  However, in a recent interview with Larry King he makes real sense.  He thinks CBS should keep Bob Schieffer, who after all has been doing a very good job, and spend the $20 million they want to pay the over-rated Katie Couric to beef up the news division.  An excellent idea, and one CBS will of course not implement.  Hell, why do the right thing when you can put a pretty face on the screen?  I would go step further and say spend $5 or $10 million to get an excellent news person if Schieffer doesn’t want to stay, and then use the rest to do as Rooney suggests.  In addition, get those reporters blogging so they can interact with the viewers.
