Leaving ABC has turned out to be a major windfall for Ted Koppel. He’ll soon being documentaries for The Discover Channel, the New York Times has offered him a job on their op-ed page, and now he’s hooking up with NPR. I don’t know who the idiot was that let this man get away from ABC, but it was a bad business decision on his or her part.
This is truly a frightening turn of events. Think what people could discover and how that information might hurt this country.
I first became a fan of Doctor Who after coming upon it by accident during a Arkansas PBS station’s fundraiser. I became hooked and watched it religously until I went off to college (the Springfield, MO PBS station, KOZK, never had cool shows like that). I began with Tom Baker’s fantastic turn as the Doctor and watched through Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy. I even watched the very bad 1996 TV movie with Paul McGann as the Doctor and, of all people, Eric Roberts (you know, Julia’s big brother) as The Master! Of that group, Baker is definately the best.
When I heard the BBC was going to begin airing all-new episodes with Christopher Eccleston I was intrigued. Eccleston is an excellent actor and I wondered what he would bring to the character. So far, I’ve heard nothing but great things about the new series and Eccelton’s performance. Unfortunately, he decided to leave and now David Tennant is stepping into the role. Again, Tennant is a great actor, but very different from Eccleston.
I had hoped someone on this side of the pond would pick up the show and now The Sci-Fi Channel has done just that. After Battlestar Galactica leaves the air in March, Sci-Fi will begin airing the 13 episodes comprising Eccleston’s tenure. I look forward to checking it out.
