Here’s a thought, China, why not let your citizens make their own decisions. If they don’t like Memoirs of a Geisha, OK, but at least the would get to make that decision for themselves, not have Big Brother make the decision for them.
I find it very interesting that representatives for Google are being called to Washington in order to explain why they decided to enable China’s persecution of its citizenry. Of course, Google isn’t the only Internet company guilty of this: both Yahoo and MSN are partners in China’s denial of basic freedoms to its citizens. Google has the following to say:
In a statement yesterday, Mr Smith drew comparisons between Google and
Radio Free Europe and Asia, reflecting on the capacity the radio
stations had to empower the "voices of freedom throughout Communist
countries".
That is a truly asinine statement. Here’s the major difference: these groups did not engage in self censorship. They did not delete words like "freedom" and "democracy" from their broadcasts. Google, MSN, and Yahoo are not "empowering" voices of freedom; they are making sure those voices will never be heard.
So will Hamas renounce its terorist past and learn to work with Israel? Somehow I don’t think too many people are sleeping easy in Israel these days, and who can blame them.
