Stem Cell Research = Holocaust

You have to wonder what the hell is up with Republicans who are against stem cell research.  Part of me can understand their reluctance to embrace the issue, but to compare it to the Holocaust has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.  My own state’s GOP politicians are having their own problems with stem cell research.  Former Missouri Governor and Senator John Danforth, pro-life Republican, Episcopal minister, and the epitome of a moderate politician, came out early on in favor of the initiative to constitutionally guarantee Missouri the right to conduct federally-allowed stem cell research.  Even Governor Matt Blunt has come out in favor of the initiative, and polling shows that Missourians support the it two-to-one.  This could really turn out to be major problem for the Republican Party in Missouri.  Many conservative religious groups, the same groups that helped put the GOP in office, are speaking out against the initiative.  Time will tell how this turns out, but I think we’ll see more GOP politicians in Missouri coming out in favor of the initiative, or just keeping their mouth shut until the storm blows over.

Will It Matter?

It’s beginning to become clear that I. Lewis Libby Jr. was instructed, possible by the Vice President himself, to leak the name of covert CIA agent for purely political reasons.  See here and here.  But I find myself wondering if it will matter to the public.  Most seem to understand that the excuses given by the administration as reason for the Iraq War are bogus.  However, the mentality seems to be "What’s done is done."  We may have been lied to, but there’s nothing we can do about it.  Of course, there are also those who believe we should support the president no matter how bad he screws unless, of course, that president is a Democrat who lied about getting a blow job in the oval office.  The president has two years left in office.  He may lose some of his power if Democrats gain seats in the House and Senate, but he’s certainly not going to ask for Cheney’s or Rove’s resignation.  He’s certainly not going to change his stance.  And the American people will look the other way until he’s out office because they’re more concerned with Desperate Housewives and Oprah’s latest book club pick.
