Can NBC just not catch a break? I have not doubt they were hoping the Olympics would help them clean up in the ratings, but those networks choosing to air original programming (where are you CBS?) are giving the Olympics a run for their money. The Games are routinely beat (badly!) by Fox’s American Idol and this past Sunday were not only beat by Grey’s Anatomy, but also by an original episode of Desperate Housewives! In even more bad news, it looks like the network may have to offer "make goods" to advertisers for not getting the promised audience numbers. Ouch!
On another note, it looks like ABC’s choice to air Grey’s Anatomy after the Super Bowl has paid off. For the second week in a row the show has beat its sophomore-slump lead in. I’m a huge fan of the show myself — have been since it premiered as a mid-season replacement late in the 04/05 season. It’s well-deserving of the praise. It will be interesting to see if this lasts. Granted, no one expects the show to get the same post-Super Bowl numbers every week, but it did draw fewer viewers than the previous week’s regular showing.
What is the world coming to when parents are actually having to seek a judges ruling to decide if their son should or should not be circumcised? Moreover, to those who equate circumcision to female genital mutilation — you’re idiots. They obviously have no fucking idea what female genital mutilation entails.
You know what, I am no fan of Hugo Chavez. I dislike how he uses his country’s oil as a sledgehammer against the world, and I dislike how he is cozying up to the likes of Cuba and Iran. However, you have to admit he makes for fun reading. It’s rare when you see a world leader basically tell planet’s last superpower to, in the words of our illustrious VP, go fuck themselves. I also think it’s dangerous — for us and them. Cozying up to Iran may not be the smartest move on Chavez’s part, and we certainly can’t afford to be cut off from their oil.
I was pleased to see a Kansas City, MO judge ruled that Missouri could not deny gays and lesbians a license to be foster parents. However, I have to wonder how long it will last. Missouri overwhelmingly passed a anti-gay marriage amendment in 2004, so how long will it be before state lawmakers pass simmilar legislation to ban same-sex foster parents? Not long if I know my Conservative Missourians. Republican Governor Matt Blunt is, of course, opposed to this, but I am really disappointed that Attorney General Jay Nixon, a Democrat, is fighting against this. All the points the state attorneys made against allowing this were not only flawed, but for rather silly and stupid. Nixon has been a very good Attorney General for the state and he has often fought the good fight against those would harm our citizens; and he has never been afraid of going up against a sitting Governor, Matt Blunt included, when it was necessary. Unfortunately, Nixon wants to be Governor, so he’s not going give Blunt any ammuntion against him. As a Democrat nin a mostly Republican state government, Nixon has usually been a bit on the conservative side, but he’s always struck me as fair. In this case, it looks like he’s choosing politics over what’s best for the foster care system.
