Usually, when you read something about the inner workings of the Supreme Court the assumption is that even though you have nine people of varying political beliefs there is an atmosphere of judicial professionalism and collegiality. Well, it seems that may not be the case. Strange that a case like this would crack the veneer. What will an abortion case reveal?
I not a huge fan of the Dixie Chicks. Hell, until the whole brouhaha about their remarks in London concerning our fearless leader I had never listened to their music. That being said, you have to hand it to them. They don’t back down and they stand together. When Natalie Maines said what she did, a lot of people tried to say it was just her, that Emily Robison and Martie Maguire were good ol’ Conservative country girls caught up in Maines liberal slander. As the interviews following the incident showed, that was simply not the case. They totally supported their band mate, but the group as a whole paid a price. Their fellow country stars dissed them in public, they were pulled from the line-up of performers on some country music award show, they had to watch as the assholes at Clear Channel fed the flames of controversy and destroyed their CDs in public, they had to endure death threats against themselves and their families members, and they had to put up with people predicting their singing career was over. Well, that last one proved wrong. Their CDs kept selling like crazy, their concerts continued to sell out, and they became more popular than ever before.
Well, they have a new CD out and if their first single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," is any indication, they are as unrepentent as ever. I say, "Good for them!" We as Americans should be ashamed of ourselves for the way they were treated. It was truly un-American.
