High Praise, Indeed
I know John McCain wants to be president, but is high praise from Jerry Fallwell the way to go? I know that Falwell still has a lot of power among Conservative Christians, but recently we’ve seen some grumblings from inside the Evangelical movement about statements made by Falwell, Robertson, and their ilk. McCain has always been attractive to moderates and independents, but hitching his campaign to a hateful person like Falwell may not keep them. If Evangelicals don’t feel they can vote for a Democrat they’ll just stay home. Which is not to say that Evangelicals could not or would not vote for a Democrat. I live in a very Conservative part of Missouri and attend a church that is considered Evangelical, yet many of my fellow parishoners are registered Democrats or find no Biblical quandry with voting against a Republican. McCain would do better, I think, to keep his moderate status than to get into bed with the the likes of Falwell.
