The Fall Season

I’m such a TV hound that I actually get enjoyment out of the networks’ fall schedule announcement.  Channel Island has posted what some are saying will be NBC’s new fall schedule, and I already see things I don’t like.

  • Monday:   Deal or No Deal, Studio 60 from the Sunset Strip, Black Donnellys

  • Tuesday:  Deal or No Deal,, Scrubs, Something, L&O: SVU
  • Wednesday:  Deal or No Deal,, Kidnapped, L & O
  • Thursday:  Earl, (new comedy tba), The Office, untitled Tina Fey comedy, ER
  • Friday:  Friday Night Lights, Vegas, Medium
  • Saturday:  repeats
  • Sunday:  NFL football

First, I hate that they’ve moved Medium to Friday nights.  I know this is a much more competitive night than it has been in years, but it just seems like the wrong night, especially paired with testosterone shows like Friday Night Lights, which I have to assume is about football, and Vegas.  Second, if NBC thinks My Name Is Earl will draw people back to Thursday nights I think they’re in for a sad surprise.  I also think it’s stupid, and cheap, to put Deal or No Deal on three nights a week.  Did they learn nothing from the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire backlash?  Sadly, it looks like Surface won’t be returning.  I really liked that show.  Of course, this could be wrong.  Some shows NBC has already greenlit and publicized don’t appear here.

A Bad Decision?

I find myself wondering if the resignation of Boston College English professor, Steve Almond, due to the university’s decision to have Condolezza Rice speak at graduation was the right decision to make.  Granted, I understand that he dislikes Secretary Rice, and he lays that out quite well in his resignation letter, but is it the right choice?  Wouldn’t it be better to be at the university to speak out against Rice?  Wouldn’t it be better to show his students how to stand up for what you believe by speaking out, not quitting?  Yes, his resignation is a form of protest and a way to exercise his First Amendment right, but it just seems like a waste to me.  All that will happen is that Rice will show up, she might get a few boos, and then she will leave.  The university will go on with its daily life, but without this professor.  It’s just a waste.
