Why Is Colin Powell a Republican?
I’ve often wondered why Colin Powell is a Republican. As his most recent comments bare out, he disagrees with just about everything the modern Republican Party promotes: he’s lately spoken out against the Iraq war, although that’s too little too late; he doesn’t spew the usual Republican anti-gay bullshit; he’s pro-choice; he supports at least limited affirmative action; he doesn’t support unlimited spending without consequences; he embraces a common sense approach to terrorism; and he doesn’t support the party’s current immigration policies. Powell belongs to a type of Conservatism that doesn’t exist anymore, at least not in the party’s current form. Not all the policies of the Democratic Party would appeal to Powell, but he would feel a hell of a lot more welcome.
