The Excess of Youth No Longer Secret

Often times, young people see college as a time to experiment, a time to do things that we might not ever have thought to do or ever think to do again, without anyone ever findind out.  I mean, who among us hasn’t done things in college that, in retrospect, we now see as stupid and sometimes dangerous.  Extreme alcohol consumption, possibly some drug experimentation, and one night stands.  Even the most shy person would partake of this on a minimal basis.  Today, I think it’s even worse than when  I was in college 15 years ago.

Here’s the thing:  Like Vegas, we always thought what happened in college stayed in college and rarely followed you into the adult world.  Well, as this article points out, the Internet is making it much easier for employers to find out all kinds of things about prospective employees. Especially those who very stupidly advertise their excesses on sites like MySpace, Friendster, and a host of others.  If you don’t want people to find out how much you enjoyed marijuana or how often you engaged in promiscuous sex, well, don’t advetise on the Internet.  The Internet does a good job of cataloging all of our mistakes, and unfortunately anyone can access it — even dangerous people.  We’re well into the Internet Age, kids, and if you put it out there someone will surely find it.
