I’m sorry, I just don’t get the military’s reasoning that having openly gay men and women in the service will be “damaging to unit morale and choesion.”  How?  Because there are a few closed-minded bigots who would make their lives hell?  If these men and women want to serve I think they can handle it; I mean, just being gay in this country is dangerous for every out-of-the-closet man and woman. In a time when we need good, qualified, and eager people to serve our nation why should we turn people away simply because they’re gay?  It’s not only stupid, it’s dangerous.  Canada and Europe have had openly gay soldiers for decades and it hasn’t been a problem.  What’s wrong with American that we can’t deal with this?

Have you ever read the satirical novels of Christopher Buckley?  They’re quite funny.  Two of my favorites are Thank You for Not Smoking and No Way to Treat a First Lady.  For the longest time I never knew he was the son of William F. Buckley, Jr., conservative founder of the National Review magazine.  C. Buckley takes no prisoners in his novels and both side of the political spectrum are often skewered.  That being said, I’m a little surprised by this humorous take-down of the Bush II administration.
