Wolf Blitzer says he was “surprised” Lynne Cheney would question is patriotism for daring to ask questions she didn’t want to answer. Well, Wolf, where the hell have you been for the last six years? This is nothing new for the Bush-Cheney White House, and if we’re being upfront, Wolf, CNN has been one of the great enablers of this attitude. Great job asking the tough questions, it’s about time, but don’t act like this hasn’t been going on since September 12, 2001.
I guess I don’t understand what’s up witht he people of Connecticut. They chose not to vote for Joe Lieberman during the Senate primary, but most polling shows Lieberman with a commanding lead over Democratic nominee Ned Lamont. So what’s the deal? Granted, I understand that Lieberman is pulling in a lot of Republican voters, but in order to stay so far ahead he also has to be pulling in a lot of Democrat voters, as well. Why would the people of Connecticut try to boot out Lieberman and then put him in as an independent? If they somehow think they’ve taught old Joe a lesson they should think again. Losing the primary has only made Senator Lieberman even more resistant to changing his stance on anything, let alone Iraq; and putting him in the Senate as an independent will only make matters worse. He could very well decide control of the Senate for the final two years of President Bush’s term!
Things must not be looking good for Republicans if President Bush pulling out the taxes card as weapon against Democrats. How sad for the President. As if he and the Republican party can show they’ve done so great being stewards of our money. Try something else, Mr. President.
I guess I should be excited the Cardinals won the World Series, it has been nearly 25 years since the last one, but I just can’t bring myself to care. I used to be such a huge fan of the Cardinals, but in recent years I’ve lost interest in most of baseball. Oh, well, hooray for the Cardinals.
What an ass Rush Limbaugh is! Instead of having a discussion of the merits concerning stem cell research he instead attacks Michael J. Fox for exaggerating the affects of his Parkinson’s in a series of ads for candidates supporting stem cell (the McCaskill ad). Of course, there’s nothing new here. Limbaugh is an ass. I’m ashamed he’s from Missouri.
Not to be outdone by Fox, several Republican celebrities are running a counter-ad. The ad includes the likes of Jim Caveziel (ultra-Conservative Catholic), Kurt Warner, St. Louis Cardinal Jeff Suppan, Kansas City Royal Mike Sweeney, and former Everybody Loves Raymond co-star, Patricia Heaton. Heaton was a bit of a suprise. She’s an outspoke opponent of abortion and supporter of Bush, but she always struck me as one of the moderates. Apparently not.
It’s never good when a president loses the hearts and minds of the men and women he’s sent to war. That’s exactly what seems to be happening among a small group of active soldiers who are petitioning Congress to get out of Iraq. I have no doubt these brave soldiers will soon be tarred and feathered as traitors, but I don’t think they’re alone. I know many soldiers who share this opinion, many who do not, but it says something that they are willing to speak out in a time when patriotism and silence are considered one and the same.
This letter by Kevin Tillman, brother of the late Pat Tillman, is remarkable simply the honest of a brother who is still grieving and who doesn’t understand what has become of the country for which he fought and his brother died for. It is a brutally honest note from someone who knows what it mean to serve his country in a war. It’s also kind of sad. You can almost feel the pain coming through in the words. Read it.
Via Tapped. And Charles Pierce is right: if this letter had been published in a much more well-known area, Kevin Tillman’s service to his country, not to mention the death of his brother, would not have saved him from being branded a traitor.
It’s almost sad to watch Republicans these days. I’m not one of those who thinks Democrats will bulldoze their way through the Senate and House, but I’m optimistic; however, is stinks of pathetic desperation the way Republicans are acting. As always happens when the GOP gets depserate, they start making veiled threats about terrorist attacks and using that to get elected. The Republican National Committee will begin airing ads speaking of the danger to Americans of even more horrorific terrorists attacks and pleading with voters to go to the polls on election day. This really is pathetic, sad, and disgusting, but par for the course with the GOP these days. Sad thing is, far too many Americans will fall for it.
It’s really kind of exciting to see Michael J. Fox coming out in support of Claire McCaskill. This ad, in which he talks about Mccaskill’s support of stem cell research, is great. However, it’s very difficult to watch. It’s obvious that Fox’s Parkinson’s has really advanced.
Via Fired Up! Missouri.
I am just really starting to dislike John McCain. Every time I see an article about this guy he has something asinine to say. For example, at a recent campaign stop in Iowa, when asked about the potential for a Democratic takeover of the Senate, John McCain replied, “I think I’d just commit suicide.” What the fuck! First, that’s a completely insensitive remark to make; second, what the fuck! I think we’re finally beginning to see the true John McCain. Not really the maverick everyone makes him out to be; just the same old GOP blowhard we’ve come to know and not love. Remarks like this make him no better than Dick Cheny.
