Waking Up

There seems to be a lot made since November about the pressing finally waking up and doing its job.  That seems to have culminated with the use of "civil war" in reference to Iraq and the yesterdays dust-up between Tim Russert of NBC’s Meet the Press and President Bush’s National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.  Here’s my question:  why did it take an election and a major change in political power for US news agencies to finally start doing their job?  I don’t want any political party, Democrat or Republican, to get a free ride.  What I want is for our country’s press to fulfill their constitutionally guaranteed job.
