Don’t Mommy Me
Well, anyone who thought Democrats would be any different when it comes to reining in the FCC they had their hopes dashed. Of course, I knew perfectly well it wouldn’t be any different. Democrats are among the worst when it comes to this issue; hell, it’s one of the Democrat commissioners, Michael J. Copps, who is the constatnly demanding the FCC to police our viewing habits more. According to Senator John Rockefeller, television is full of “junk, sex and scandals.” Well, Senator, do what the rest of us do: turn off the television or change the channel if you don’t like what you see. It is in the best interests of the networks to fight this with as much power as they can muster. If they are forced to dumb down programming and placate right wingers who think television should carry 7th Heaven 24 hours a day, they will watch their viewership erode, and profits right behind them. Take a look at what’s popular out there. Grey’s Anatomy and CSI are watched by nearly 50 million people every Thursday. The CSI franchise, full of violence and gore, draws nearly 60 million combined viewers. Desperate Housewives, full of all that sex and scandal puritanical Johnny hates, consistently draws in 20 million viewers. Now, let’s compare that to the “wholesome” programming everyone wants to see. Perennial favorite 7th Heaven, at its most popular, drew half the audience of Housewives and barely draws a quarter of that number now. Disney’s popular musicals like High School Musical and Jump In! draw 6 and 7 million viewers — a breakout hit for cable, but barely a blip on the broadcast networks. Broadcast television cannot survive with numbers like these, neither can local affiliates.
