Will MO Go Blue in 2008?

If there’s a state in dire need for an infusion of blue, it’s my home state of Missouri.  Jay Nixon may be our best, and at this time only, hope to achieve that.  Almost from day one Matt Blunt has been an unpopular and ineffective governor who allowed politics to trump the well-being of Missouri’s citizens.  I don’t know if our state would have been better off with Claire McCaskill, but it could not have been any worse.  For me, Nixon is not a perfect candidate.  He tracks mostly moderate on most issues, but on the issues of health care and educations his ideas a rather progressive.  However, Nixon is an aggressive litigator, which is not necessary a bad thing since he’s done a lot of good for Missouri and his No Call, while flawed, was a great creation, but his support for the death penalty leaves a sour taste in my mouth.  On abortion, Nixon has aggressively fought against any law attempt to circumvent Missouri’s current anti-abortion laws.  He says that’s because he required to uphold the Missouri constitution and the law passed by the legislature.  That’s an easy to avoid taking a stand one way or another.

All that being said, it looks like Jay Nixon is currently sitting in a good position to beat Matt Blunt.  Nixon has only lost two election, both for US Senator, and every time he’s won it’s been with 60% or more of the electorate.  However, no one should count out Matt Blunt.  He can be an aggressive politician and thanks to daddy Blunts deep pocketed friends and will most likely outdo Nixon in donations.  What Nixon has going for him is his popularity in the state and the fact that President Bush currently has a state-wide approval rating below 40%.

Nobody’s Listening

It’s great to hear from people of the Conservative political side of the aisle express outrage as the Bush administration’s actions toward detainees, but does it really matter what they think? Nobody in the Bush White House gives a flying fuck; they’ll just be branded traitors and ignored.  Such is the political landscape we live in these days.  Here’s hoping whomever comes in next actually changes course because that certainly isn’t a given.

What an Ass

According to presidential candidate Mitt Romney he’s not responsible for the signs his supporters display and that everyone should just lighten up.  What an ass!  He claims he doesn’t look at the signs of every person who poses with him, but how the hell can you miss a sign almost as big as the woman holding it?  And I’m sorry, but once you pose for a picture you are responsible for what the sign says because by posing for the picture you are giving approval to the despicable words being displayed.  Republicans like to get on their high horse when lefties compare President Bush to Hitler, and they should because it’s wrong.  Yet, when a dumb ass like this woman displays a sign pretty much saying that a vote for Barak Obama or Hillary Clinton is a vote for Osama bin Laden they’re silent; they say “Lighten up.”  Hypocrites every one of them!

Is it me or is this year’s crop of Republican candidates a bunch of assholes?  We’re not even in the general election yet and they are taking the low road quicker than ever before.  Well, in my mind that makes it a lot easier for a Democrat to win.  This moron of a woman may have thought her sign was funny, but I firmly believe the great majority of Americans find it disrespectful not only to the candidates, but to every man, woman, and child who died was murdered on September 11, 2001.

Did You Feel the Dread

Did you feel that cold dread that moved over the country at 7:16 am this morning.  For a brief time Vice-President Cheney was in control as the President underwent minor surgery to remove polyps from his large intestine.  I guess we should all feel lucky he did take us into yet another unnecessary war.

NBC Takes the Cynical, Low Road

I was really looking forward to seeing NBC’s new Bionic Woman series.  I’ve watched the promos and previews and it actually looks quite interesting, not to mention they got Katee Sackhoff to play a bionic baddie.  Now the whole thing seems tainted because news came out today that NBC has cast Grey’s Anatomy asshole, Isaiah Washiongton, in a multi-episode arc and offered him a deal for a series in the 2008-2009 season.  Sure, I understand NBC is trying to build some word-of-mouth for a series that will surely struggle in a season full of really good shows, but this just reaks of cynical and lowball publicity.  I certainly don’t wish for Washington to never work again, but I think he should pay a price until he is willing to admit that what he said was not only wrong but racist.  Yes, racist!  Racism is not just something to do with skin color.  Instead, all Washington has done is go on Larry King and not only deny what said (again), but blame Knight and play the race card.  Washington is both sad and pathetic.  I was happy when ABC fired Washongton from Grey’s; he needed to pay a price for what he said and the violence he brought to the set.  Sure, we live in a free country and yes we are allowed to say whatever we wish, but that doesn’t mean we should not have to pay a consequence for what we say.  Freedom is not free, and it never should be.  NBC made a bad choice, a cynical choice, the wrong choice, but when you’re the fourth place network what else can you do?

One Down

Well, one attempt to give the fuckers at the FCC, and by entesnion fuckers like the Family Research Council, more control over what we are and are not allowed to watch on television was turned back.  Unfortunately, that’s not the end of all this bullshit.  Senator Rockefeller is working with the Commerce Committee to produce legislation that will give the fuckers at the FCC greater control of violent content on broadcast, cable, and sattelite.

When All Else Fails…

You know, the motto of the Bush Administration should be “When all else fails, keep doing the same, only make the mess bigger.”  In their infinite “wisdom” these chuckleheads are actualy considering increase the number of troops in Iraq.  Because, as we all know, the first surge has been a glorious success.

Remember That Military Training?

For someone who spent many years in the military you’d think John McCain would understand how important chain of command is to any organisation, military or otherwise.  Telling everyone they’re all equal just won’t work; any freshman business student should know that, let alone someone who wants to be the leader of the free world.  Not that I’m unhappy with the McCain implosion.  If there was one overrated candidate this election season it was John McCain.  Hopefully he’ll ride off into political sunset and settle for being the Senator from the great state of Arizona.

If I Could only Laugh

This would actually be funny if the images weren’t so disturbing, but guess that’s the idea.

Screwing Over the Innocent

There are many reason why I haven’t been a supporter of the death penalty for nearly 15 years, and the case of Troy Anthony Davis is a prime example.  Davis was convicted of killing a police officer in 1989, but here’s the rub:  seven of nine main witnesses who helped put Davis in jail have now recanted their testimony and thanks to a stupid law passed by Newt Gingrich and shamefully signed by President Bill Clinton, Davis has run out of appeal options.  I don’t care what your fellings are about criminals abusing our justice system or your support for the death penalty we should all support a fair trial for each citizen.  Obviously something went wrong with this man’s trial and he deserves another day in court.  The fact that all of his appeals have failed doesn’t say much about our justice system.
