Damn You, Phil

Well, that bastard of a groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shawdow today, so it’s six more weeks of winter.  Of course, that’s not the most shocking of forecasts in February.

GMail is Looking Better and Better

So, Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo.  Well, at first blush it might be just what they need to become more competitive with Google, but I don’t really know or care.  You can read an excellent Business Week article here about all the pros and cons of this merger.  If you’re interested in the whole old media versus new media discussion, you can read Jeff Jarvis’ opinion here.  For me, it comes down to email.  I switched from Hotmail to Yahoo Mail about 5 years ago and I’ve never looked back.  I like Yahoo Mail, I like the interface, and I like the overall service.  However, is Microsoft plans to combine it into their Hotmail service I just may have to make the switch to Gmail.

Who Says The Economy is Bad?

Well, I guess if you’re Exxon Mobil the economy is wonderful!  A company only Ebenezer Scrooge could love.  Maybe the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present an Future need to visit the CEO of Exxon Mobil.  There is something wrong with gas prices in this country when a company like this can make a net income, not gross income but net income, of more than $10 billion when the great majority of people are struggling to keep up with rising prices at the pumps.

Another Sign of the Apocalypse?

I’m sure our dear Ann Coulter is being her usual pain-in-the-ass self when she says she’ll campaign for Hillary Clinton if John McCain is the Republican nominee, but it does bring up an interesting point.  Everyone likes to talk about those fucking independents, you know the people who can’t make up their minds, but so far they seem to be voting Democrat this year and McCain isn’t drawing excessive numbers of them.  So, if John McCain can’t get a majority of the independent vote and the right wing of the Republican party finds it difficult to vote him, what chance does he have to win?

I actually think John McCain will be a formidable opponent, so we certainly shouldn’t count him out.  However, considering his distaste for some of the far right’s politics it may not be an easy sell for them. In the end, it will come down to a choice between not voting and voting for someone who’s in your party, but doesn’t necessarily agree with the you political ideals.  Personally, I think they’ll choose to vote for McCain simply to keep a Democrat out of the Oval Office.
