Supporting the Troops (Not!)

Once again, John McCain proves that he’s not the straight-talker the press has made him out to be.  In fact, he seems to be turning into nothing more than a right-wing shill and a mouthpiece for the Bush Administration.  Currently, a new G.I. Bill is working it’s way through the labyrinth of government that will increase tuition assistance for men and women serving in the military.  As you might imagine, something like this has bipartisan support, but not from the Bush administration.  Why?  Well, if we give service men and women greater educational opportunity they’ll be less interested in sticking around to fight the government’s wars!  Is that not the most ass-backwards thinking?  I know that some men and women enter the armed services and see it as a career, but that is not what how many see it.  Many people see military service as a way to better themselves and as we all know education is one the best avenues for bettering one’s self.

One guess who hasn’t signed on to support this bill.  You guessed it, John McCain.  He gives his usual answer when asked about it, “Uh, I don’t know.” Someone needs to be making more of an issue out of this. A man like John McCain should be walking over everyone to get his name on this bill; that is, unless he’s too afraid to piss off the Bush people and lose their support.  How sad.

Now We Know

I’ve never understood why so many feels it’s important that political candidates reveal their tax return information.  What is they expect to find.  Well, after some intense, and in my opinion overwrought, pressure from the Obama campaign the Clinton’s have released their tax return information.  This batch dates back to when Mrs. Clinton joined the Senate; although, previous years have been released dating back to when Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas.

So, what do we find out?  Well, the Clintons make a shit load of money.  They’ve both had successful books published for which they’ve received, and still receiving, royalties in the eight-figure range.  We know that Senator Clinton makes a little over $150,000 as a member of the Senate (too much, in my opinion for any member of Congress).  There were some interesting things include such as mortgage interest totaling more than $80,000 a year, a variety of interest and dividend income sources, and that Bill Clinton’s books are far more successful than Senator Clinton’s.

So again, what does this prove or disprove?  Nothing in my opinion.
