I’m not one of those people who bashes the UN at every turn but sometimes they really prove to be a worthless organization when it comes to safeguarding and helping those in need.  The Security Council exists to investigate international disputes and recommend action but has been pretty much toothless for the last 30 years because of tit-for-tat vetoes by the permanent members (US, UK, France, China, and Russia). 

Today, China and Russia vetoed sanctions against Zimbabwe’s “president,” Robert Mugabe.  Why?  According to Russia it’s just an attempt by the West to interfere in the internal matters of Zimbabwe in the name of security.  Well, duh, jackass.  That’s what the Security Council is supposed to do!  When you consider Mugabe’s torture of opposition members and the fact that his gang of “police” even threwa child down on concrete, which led to both her legs being broken, you’d think this would be enough for countries to step up and say enough.  Apparently not for Russia and China, but then should we be surprised?
