Was I Right?
A few days ago I referred, rather toungue-in-cheek, to Russia’s recent invasion of Georgia as a 21st century Cold War. Well, maybe I was right.

Apparently, the Hippocratic Oath means nothing to a group of ring wing asshats who refused to provide medical services to gay and lesbian patients. I have no doubt that the right wingers will be claiming religous persecution. Idiots!
It seems the young democracies of Eastern Europe are a little worried by the recent actions of their former comrade, Russia. Maybe the should be. Watching Russia this week has been like flipping though a history book about the Communist takeover of Eastern Europe. My personal opinion, which doesn’t amount to a whole hell of a lot, is that we need to be worried about the actions of the so-called democracy of Russia. The question is, would the world allow history to repeat itself? Considering the weak responses of the world’s democracies to Russia, not to mention the pathetic response from America, I think it could easily happen again.
Part of me can understand why Random House has chosen not to publish The Jewel of Medina, a fictional novel about the Prophet Muhammad and his child bride, but the bigger part of me is angered and disappointed in Random House for letting fear force them into self-censorship. If we allow fear the power to tell us what will or will not be published we are headed down a slippery and scary slope. Random House should grow some balls.
If I needed to be reminded why I always thought Toby Keith was a complete ass this did it for me.
What is it about women named Monica being in the middle of Washington, DC scandals? No, it’s nothing so innocuous as late night, clandestine blow jobs in the oval office. This Monica actually attempted to fill the Justice Department with lawyers who were true red Republicans and Bush lovers. A hell of a lot more heinous than a little fellatio.
Turncoat Joe Lieberman stopped being a Democrat a long time ago and the fact that he plans to speak at the Republican national convention should make people realize he needs to go. Personally, I think his campaigning for John McCain and attacking Senator Obama should have been enough, but with the Dems tight margin in the Senate I can understand why Dems have looked the other, but speaking at the opposition’s convention in which he will surely attack Senator Obama should be the last straw. If this election goes as well as expected the Democratic Party won’t need him anymore. Toss him out and let him be with the Republicans he so loves. To do otherwise would be beyond weak on the part of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
I’m not one of those people who bashes the UN at every turn but sometimes they really prove to be a worthless organization when it comes to safeguarding and helping those in need. The Security Council exists to investigate international disputes and recommend action but has been pretty much toothless for the last 30 years because of tit-for-tat vetoes by the permanent members (US, UK, France, China, and Russia).
Today, China and Russia vetoed sanctions against Zimbabwe’s “president,” Robert Mugabe. Why? According to Russia it’s just an attempt by the West to interfere in the internal matters of Zimbabwe in the name of security. Well, duh, jackass. That’s what the Security Council is supposed to do! When you consider Mugabe’s torture of opposition members and the fact that his gang of “police” even threwa child down on concrete, which led to both her legs being broken, you’d think this would be enough for countries to step up and say enough. Apparently not for Russia and China, but then should we be surprised?
If there’s someone in need of being brought down a peg or three it’s Karl Rove. This man and his president have thumbed their nose at American law from nearly day one. I’m sure nothing will come of this since Congress is often so weak but in an election year, when Americans need to be reminded of the Bush Administration’s revenge politics, it’s the perfect time to drag this guy in by force.
Well, it’s Independence Day weekend, so of course we have to trot out the Founding Fathers. A recent poll shows that nearly 70% of Americans think the Founding Fathers would be disappointed in the way America has turned out. First of all, I think polls like this are beyond stupid because no one can truly know what men born nearly 250 years ago would think of 21st century America. Second, all that being said, I don’t think that it’s necessarily true George, Thomas, Benjamin, et al., would be completely disappointed in America. Sure, there are certainly paths our country has taken now and again they might have found wrong-headed and downright stupid, but overall our country has turned out pretty damn good. When you look at the rest of the world America looks good. People still scramble to get into this country by whatever means, you can still live the American dream, we are still one of the most free countries on the planet, and politics aside America is a great place. We certainly have some things that need changing, but that doesn’t detract from just how great this country has become since that fateful day in 1776 when our Founding Fathers said enough to King George III. We’re not perfect, but who said we had to be?
